Catching up after the weekend

We had about three inches of snow overnight in Vermillion. It's very heavy, moisture-laden stuff, but it makes for a pretty scene as opposed to the brown, dirty scene we've had since the winter's snows melted last week. There's a chance for more tonight, they say. . . . .

The Coyote women (I never hear anybody call them the Lady Coyotes, thankfully; they're the Coyotes, period!) go for the gold in the regional at the Dome tonight. I hope the locals fill up the place since the student body is gone for spring break. . . . . .

Good for Louie Krogman! I've never met him, but they say he's a great kid, and he's obviously a team player. Not only did he win the Spirit of Su distinction individually, but his team won a state championship. It's the first for White River in 53 years, and I was there when they won in 1955! I was a high school junior, sitting in the front row of the bleachers that used to be at the north end of the Huron Arena court, and Gib Burnette (I think his first name was Gib, but that doesn't sound right) hit the game-winning shot to beat Hayti in overtime. That was Garney Henley's and Coach Harley Peterson's time at Hayti. Everybody cheered against Hayti. They wouldn't have had they known what a great gentleman Garney was (and is!) as I learned when we went to Huron Collge together. I remember Larry Ingalls, long-time Webster publisher, was also a member of that White River ballclub. . . . . .

My daughter and grandson are gone until next Monday, so Oliver the dog and I have the house to ourselves for this, the fifth of 11 straight days. That's not necessarily a good thing. Thursday through Sunday I had wall-to-wall basketball to watch on television, but now there's a break in daytime basketball until the NCAA tournament starts on Thursday. . . . . .

Colin Cowherd, the morning sportstalk guy on ESPN Radio, is gung-ho for the "best teams" getting to the finals, not only in college football but in college basketball. Who wants the best teams to get there?!!! I want MY TEAMS to get there. So the sooner North Carolina (especially North Carolina!) or Texas or UCLA or Georgetown or Memphis loses, the better it is! . . . . .

I hope Drake can win a game or two or more in the tournament. They've had such a marvelous season, and it has been fun to follow their radio broadcasts online. Now that I'm this close, I hope I can get down to Des Moines to a game or two next winter. Adam Templeton of Rapid City Central will be a junior, and Jared Vlastuin of Lennox will be a freshman, so we'll have a South Dakota touch to the Bulldogs. . . . . .

Zach Merwin's transfer from Pierre to Sully Buttes worked out well for him and them. He had a great season. In the state "B" tournament first-rounder, he hit the game-winning jumper against Tripp-Delmont-Armour after teammate Spencer Yackley made a steal in the final 10 seconds. Then in the third-place game which Sully Buttes won, Merwin scored 44 points and earned an all-tournament team slot. And he's only a sophomore! Sully Buttes will be strong again next year. How about a fifth straight state "B" for the Charger boys to match that distinction which the Charger girls earned this year! . . . . .

Good going, Augustana men! They had a shot at kayoing Northern in the regional semis yesterday had it not been for a couple turnovers and bad shots in the final minute. But a good season for Augie, unfortunately at USD's expense twice. . . . . .

After almost weekly primary elections and caucuses one Tuesday after another, I'm losing interest in the presidential campaigns, now that there is such a long gap until Pennsylvania late in April. I see Sen. McCain is in Iraq, relishing every minute of having generals, soldiers, and other signs of the military surrounding him. . . . . .

Is Sen. Obama responsible for what his pastor says? If I run for office, am I accountable for everything any of my pastors has said from the pulpit over the years? I guess so. I guess, if you're a candidate, you're better off if you don't go to church. . . . . .

Happy St. Patrick's Day to each of the thousands of people who I am sure are reading this blog today. (Yeah, right.)

Hi Park! I TOLD you I would post!
Here is a question many servicemen and women might like to hear YOU answer-
Would YOU stay in a church were YOUR pastor said -
1)“God damn America”
2)“the US of KKKA”.
3)September 11th 2001 was “chickens coming home to roost”
4)The American government manufactued the AIDS virus in order to kill blacks
5)“America is still the number-one killer in the world”
Obama 1st said he never heard Wright say these things, then he admited he did. Does that matter to you?
A week or so ago you said you were enjoying the race. No more?

Love ya!

Hey Park,

For a minute there I thought Steve thought YOU were running for president given the tone of his comment.

Boy, Steve must have missed Barack's magnificent speech on race in America the other day. (or probably listened to Rush's response of the speech instead).

Go Barack Go!

****

I'll be in Vermillion this summer working with the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute and also working on my doctoral dissertation.

Hope all is well!

Hi Eddie Anonymous,

As a matter of fact, I listened to the entire speech. I got the message. Obama is a "typical liberal politician." He thinks the way to make this country great is through pacifism (He will have a little chat with Alkaida and our other enemies and find out how they "feel" about us, and how we can make nice with them), higher taxes, bigger government, bashing corporate America, redistribution of wealth, and class warfare. He bashes Bush with no tolerance, but has tolerance for his Angry anti-American pastor, who he did NOT disavow, while throwing his white grandmother under the bus. In the past he said he would not have Don Imus working for him, but he kept J. Wright working for him. Until he got caught. He speaks about Imus's unbelievably offensive statements, but it was okay to let his children listen to J. Wrights anti-American hate statements. Michelle Obama stated she had never in her LIFE has been proud of her country, until B. Obama started doing well in the election, and has also said that America is a country that is just downright mean. Obama seems to surround himself with angry anti-American people. A little strange for one who is running a campaign on "Judgemet" and being a "Uniter." It appears he is the exact opposite. Obama is a typical pure liberal socialist. A rock star no more, he made the speech only in attempt to apply a tourniquet to a political hemorrhage that was sure to cause his demise. This was not a speech of political courage, it was a speech of political necessity. But what do I know, I'm just "a typical white person." I just don't understand why so many "far left liberals" agree with what J. Wright says. That is what I am hearing at work, "what did Wright say that was a lie."

Don't get me wrong Mr. Anonymous, I am happy and toroughly enjoying the Liberal Democrat's current "circular firing squad" strategy. And I see no difference between Hillary and Obama at ALL.

"Go ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, MARINES!!

Dude, that rant, Steve, was exactly why we have a philosophical difference on the direction we're headed under (a) McCain or (b) Barack Obama. Faux News worthy indeed. Hume? Hannity?

After eight years of Bush and compassionate conservatism, I'm quite ready for some change and liberalism.

Eddie,

Just talking politics, dude. Nothing personal.

I do hope that this election will be about philosophical differences between liberalism and conservatism. We need that. But I disagree with your claim that we've been through 8 years of conservatism (I believe the "compassionate" remark was sarcasm). Bush is very liberal except when it comes to national security.

I suppose you realize that JFK was very conservative. I guess you are happy the Democrat party has moved left. The Republican party has also moved that way. So if you are disappointed in the last 8 years, stand by. McCain is very liberal, except on national security. Prepare to give the government much more when you start making money. Bush tax cuts expire in 2010.

One thing I find interesting is that when a person makes a logical, intelligent, coherent "rant," he is accused of listening to Rush Limbaugh, or conservative media. Actually I use all information I have access to. Liberals have no monopoly on the media in the computer age. Things have changed since the Walter Cronkite age, thankfully.

MSNBC, CNN, & CBS have given me lots of entertainment for the last few weeks. The pundits on these networks seem to have "aged" a little, I must say they look a little "haggard." The wagons are circled, but they are out of ammunition. lol.

Good luck in school. I used to drive a Vermillion School Bus back in the 70's. (Go Tanagers). I did a rural route K through 12. Was quite an experience. I live in Atlanta GA now and drive an 18 wheeler. Parker was my High School music teacher. He was a better music teacher than I was a singer. lol. I did have fun at All State Chorus though. And 110 In the Shade was fun, but that was Keith Weigandt, I believe.

I've added my url in hyperlink on my name if you get bored I have some pictures on web sites.

Steve.

P.S. Just curious, what do you think Obama will "change." And what do you think he has accomplished so far in his Political Career? Don't you think he is just a good speaker, and is using platitudes that have no substance to attract non-thinking voters? What exactly does he "hope" to "change?" Does expanding the "great society" mean change? 40 years of liberalism (read history) has not changed anything. So going back to that is the status quo, not change. This guy is more liberal than Hillary, OR Bill. Come on now. Be honest.

Eddie,

I was assuming that you are a student. I an now thinking that was an incorrect assumption. You are probably older. Sorry bout' that.

Steve,

Yes, I'm a student (hence the reference to a doctoral dissertation).

And no, Barack Obama will not solve all the world's problems but he certainly will be a refreshing voice of reason in the executive office after GB.

Eddie,

HA! So I guess you would like a new "decider." lol.

“I hear the voices and I read the front page and I hear the speculation,” Mr. Bush said then. “But I’m the decider, and I decide what’s best."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/24/weekinreview/24stolberg.html?scp=1&sq=I+Am+The+Decider&st=nyt

Obama does talk nice. And like Sen. Joe Biden said, he IS "clean and articulate." So since Al Sharpton said that he himself (Al S.) bathes and showers every day, all he needs to do is learn how to speak and he has a shot at the Presidency also.

Obama has a good shot at the nomination. And anything can happen between now and November. But there will be more scrutiny, and Obama's not used to it. It should be interesting to watch.

Steve.
